Come and Take it Festival

The War for Texas Independence began in the small town of Gonzales, when the town refused to give up a cannon. The first shot was fired when 150 Mexican troops were sent to take it by force.

Each year the town celebrates with a festival named after the hastily fashioned battle flag which said, "Come and Take It!".

One large memorial square in the center of town was set aside for the food tent which ran the entire length of the block. Opposite that was the biergarten, which was also a block long.

The Memories Mall tent was located next to the historic jailhouse. Built in the mid 1880's, the old jail has now become a museum filled with interesting displays.

Parades are always big doings in small towns. Marching bands and floats from all over the state showed up on Saturday.

Beautiful horse drawn carriages add to the historic theme of the parade.

Authentic period costumes were on display as well.

The city's antique fire engine was a real crowd pleaser as it huffed and puffed along the parade route.

Back at the fire house, the old engine gets a well deserved rest. The friendly people and the relaxed atmosphere of a small town made the weekend very special.

Sue and I really enjoyed the weekend and would like to thank the people of Gonzales and the many customers who came from all over the state. We look forward to going back very soon.

Leave Your Guns at the Bar

The 2004 Come and Take It festival saw 3 inches of rain on Friday night through Saturday afternoon. Although it made it necessary to keep the parade floats covered, the people of Gonzales still came out and cheered.

We'd like to thank Anne and JR at the St James Inn for their hospitality. They have a wonderful bed and breakfast in a lovely Victorian home.
