February 19, 1945 some 70,000 Marines prepared to assault the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. Among them were six men whose image inspired a nation. Only 3 of them survived the month long battle for "Sulphur Island" and those 3 along with the other survivors were changed forever. The story of the battle for Iwo Jima is much more than the chance photograph that we all recognize. We recommend the book "Flags of our Fathers" by James Brady. After the death of his "famous" father, James undertook a personal journey of discovery, to learn more about the men atop Mt Surabachi. It is a bittersweet story of six Americans who were immortalized on stamps, in movies and in bronze. |
